Careers

Programme of Study

At Woolton High School Careers is a vital part of the school curriculum.  It gives students hope and ambition and provides them with the knowledge to succeed in their future. Careers is delivered to years 7-11 with the aim of all students gaining as many realistic and engaging opportunities as possible during their time at the school.  Careers is designed for all students to have outcomes that link to the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks.   This will ensure that all students receive a wide range of experiences which allow them to realise their true potential.

Years 7 and 8 will follow ASDAN’s (Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network) Employability Skills and Development curriculum.  This will introduce students to careers and begin to develop their understanding.

Years 9-11 will follow Edexcel BTEC’s First Award in Business.  This will cover a number of topics that relate directly to employment whilst also helping students have a better understanding of opportunities in both education and the workplace after Year 11.  This qualification also has a heavy focus on enterprise and provides students with all of the necessary skills to become a confident and entrepreneurial individual.

The Careers programme is also extended into Vocational Options through the subject, Enterprise.  This provides realistic opportunities for students to test their skills and become and budding entrepreneur.

Careers is covered across the curriculum at Woolton High School with all subjects linking to future opportunities for the students.  This also occurs as part of a thematic curriculum where Careers is a major focus annually and through targeted interventions focusing on students’ future goals through use of their ‘Fast Tomato’.

All areas covered throughout the careers programme will allow the pupils to be better prepared for transition, with a greater understanding of the world of work.  Pupils will build up knowledge and experience to empower them to make the correct decisions about their transition steps.  Through lessons the school will provide students with the understanding of what is expected from them to give the resilience to successfully remain in their next destination.

As a school we will continually measure and assess the impact of the careers programme on our pupils.  Firstly, the school will regularly complete pupil assessments.  The school will also ensure that it works in conjunction with the Gatsby Benchmarks.  This is the responsibility of the school however these outcomes will have a positive effect on all students providing them with greater confidence and more opportunities for the future. Through this the pupils will be measured by the many more experiences and interactions that they will have.  This can often be difficult but will provide pupils with the skills to be more confident and prepared in these areas.  The students will have more interaction with employers, businesses, colleges, processes of applications and interviews as well as work experience and enterprise.

Pupils, parents, teachers and employers may access information about our schools careers programme via the school website or by contacting the schools careers leader.
